Exhibition by Mile Nichevski - Notes from the Newsagent's

The latest exhibition of Mile Nichevski, representative of the young generation Macedonian artists, will be opened on 05.11.2004. (friday) in the Cultural Center "Tocka". It represents the complex world of his drawings, or, as the author titles them - Notes from the Newsagent's.

From Maja Cankulovska review...

The exhibition consists of over 90 drawings, made in the period between 1996 - 2004, mainly on paper, in which the author uses several techniques: pen, pencil, ink, felt-tip pen, and part of them are collages. Some of these drawings are already published, and the latest are connected to the cycle started in 1996.
Mile Nichevski's characteristic expression is based on the use of pure line, free from extra encumbrance, which is in relation to his graphic education and experience as an illustrator of comics. As the title of the exhibition points out, drawings are inspired from certain conditions-fragments from the reality as shown in mass-media, which results with specific narativity in his works. Although each drawing explicitly presents certain conditions, still there is no distinctive schedule of the narration, but dada principle of coincidence in composing the parts.
Mile Nichevski's characters are dominantly children naively posing for photographing juxtaposed opposite sadistic scenes with absurd naive children's drawings. Suggested is the simplicity of illustrations for children, scenes from TV and magazines, enriched with commercial notes of incestuous, everyday dictators (politicians, pop-stars, fashion icons...).
The critical model in these drawings refers to Dadaistic and surrealistic models of subversivity, anti-artistic and critical examination and representation of dominant cultural and society norms, institutions and values. The author plays with society, political, national, religious groups, with everything that is allowed and suppressed, positioned contrary to taboos and repress of different dictators.
Drawings are consisted of merged contradictory situations and deconstructed narrations, with subconsciousness representations and uncovered sexuality in presenting artistic, ideological and theoretical controversies, paradoxes and misconceptions in contemporary culture. The author, in extremely cynical way, makes demystification of the myths and the ideological limitations, different myths from the culture, history and everyday life; and bases his images on irony and quotations, or irony in quotations. The main intention of Mile Nichevski's works is parody and ironical discussion of the normative interpretative regime, courageously making fun of the collective spirit, even with fetishes of the mega cultures ('Homage to Egon Shile', antique sculpture, medieval illustrations, Bosh, Lichtenstein...).
