"Between day and night"
In his first solo exhibition
Aleksandar Bogdanov presents around 20 graphic prints and
several paintings created in the last two years.
Similarities, but also differences, can be seen, in the
works that, above all, represent totality for themselves
and, as the title suggests, reflect the period "between day
and night". |
The
prints (mostly lithography) are complex and contrast in the usage of
painting and formal elements, and representations move from almost
realistic (self-)portraits to compounded allegoric compositions. They
have plenty of complex psychological representations of human's
conditions which exist somewhere "between day and night", some
metaphysical experiences and everyday issues and events expressed
through certain narration and with emphasized simbolicizm. Combining
together the abstract figuration, recognizable signs and
ornamental/vegetative elements (used mostly as a decorative moment)
with the symbolic use of color to express the psychological and
spiritual conditions, presents hardness, trauma, the absence of
meaning, absurdness, despair, fear...
The color functions as a basis in paintings and it can be treated in
many ways: as an expressive material, as a mean of associative and
archetypical expressions of the individual, subjective psychological
and spiritual conditions, and also as a decorative resolving element
of the painting surface.
Sometimes naive and purified, sometimes brutal and with lots of
elements, mostly experimental and still exploring, the world in
Aleksandar Bogdanov's works is at the same time world of children's
fantasies and space for sensing the exsistentional drama of
contemporary human being.
