Poetry of the
charcoal drawing
The drawing as a beginning... Because of the
technical simplicity the artist usually first shapes the artistic
sensations in the drawing, and studies the composition or the
details of the work which latter will be done in another "more
complex" technique. Usually, the biggest number of drawings has a
meaning of study, sketch or note. But that is not the case in
Natasha Andova's drawings. She puts these definitions in the
background, although sometimes elements of a draft are included, her
drawings are imagined as definite artistic realizations.
In the first
solo exhibition Natasha Andonova presents only figuration. She uses
long time known motifs: still life, self-portrait, nude and
landscape. Drawings are made in a period of several years and
usually are made in small dimensions, or in explicit big dimensions.
She creates the drawing with fast action in a form of a sketch where
certain parts of the body or the face are emphasized - expression
mostly represented in female nudes. In some of the 'love' nudes
impressionistic reminiscences are presented and the drawings are
"calm", while in other the line becomes excited and creates dynamic
with emphasized eroticism. Contrary to those, self-portraits with
different face expressions, where the graphic modulation is used to
shape the volume, refers to black and white photo-realistic
appearance. Still lives are various: from strictly classical
compositions in which the relation between represented objects and
space matters, to ultimately dynamical images of .... which also
initiate the attempt to penetrate in the sphere of abstraction.
Stylization and allure of the poetic expression are not avoided, and
the academism, too.
All of the
drawings are made in charcoal on paper technique. The choice of the
charcoal because of its sensibility brings Natasha Andonova at the
beginning of the artistic techniques erudition. The decision to
explore, again and again, only the possibilities of the charcoal and
black and white contrasts is in a certain way attitude against the
more frequently negligence of this technique in contemporary trends.
