from Elena Veljanovska review
The drawing is an ancient way of articulating our
thoughts and ideas, the primal emergence of the human intelligence
which long before the appearance of the writing developed as a form of
expression. Since then, the drawing and the human spirit are
symbiotic, constantly reflecting upon each other. Perhaps, because of
it’s ability to eternalize the passing nature of the moment the
drawing has been a unique and ireplacible way of documenting various
situations, relations, events… until the invention of photography.
It is natural that even today the drawing is a basic pictorial
technique that spreads its influence towards animation and other more
complex (even hybrid) forms of expression, which is a growing trend in
the art today.
Precisely because of the meaning, importance and the current relevance
of the drawing, one informal group of young artists initiated this
exhibition which will include only their works in this technique. This
group is always open to new members and is bond together by several
things: The love for drawing and the joy with which they draw, the
seriousness of the expression of their ideas and also, their
generational closeness. They are a picture of one generation that acts
and develops in the same context, facing the same day-to-day problems:
the lack of criteria, no roll models, the week authority of the
institutions which are required to promote higher values, isolation,
unemployment… None the less, they still ménage to stay up-to-date with
the currents of the age, they follow the contemporary scene and most
important of all, they continue to work! With their deep feel of the
age in which they live, their involvement and dedication are crucial
in creating the contemporary cultural scene of Macedonia. In this
case, by the means of the drawing they attempt to illustrate a part of
their daily life, sense of humor, fantasy, experiment… This exhibition
presents 19 artists. The treatment of the drawing differs in every one
of them. The approach that they adopt is different: from a classical
drawing, experimenting with the background, drawing with ink,
intervention with a drawing on a ready-made background up to
conceptual approach through video animation. The different artistic
approach serves only as further argument for the variety of ways and
contexts in which the drawing can manifest it self.
The very title of this exhibition (as well as it’s subtitle) also
alludes on the variety, the openness and the potential of the drawing
as a medium.
