What is to be done with ‘Balkan art’?
These thematic bloc is part of the partner research project What is to be done with ‘Balkan art’? with SCCA-Ljubljana. The texts of the projects originally appeared in Platforma 4, SCCA-Ljubljana magazine, in October 2005.
The intention of the project is to reflect and analyze the recent interest of prominent curators and art institutions (for example: In Search of Balkania, P. Weibel, E. Chufer, R. Conover, Neue Galerie in Graz; Blood and Honey – Future’s in the Balkans, H. Szeemann, Sammlung Essl in Klosterneubur; and In the Gorges of the Balkans – A Report, R. Block, Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel) for the contemporary arts in the Balkan Region.
The texts by Branka Stipancic, Misko Suvakovic, as well as interview with Eda Cufer, Erden Kosova and Vasif Kortun are dealing mainly with the following questions:
What do we mean, understand and presume when we speak about the Balkans, and especially, about the so-called Balkan art? What are the connotations and criteria used to identify some art practice and production as specific for the Balkan?
