Aleksandar Stankovski
Aleksandar Stankovski is the most important Macedonian painter in the last thirty years. Because of three reasons: the big painting erudition and the passionate dedication to the painting medium; the virtuous technique which he possess and which enable him to move his brush through the world history with great ease; and last, Stankovski is of great importance for our context since in his painting he opens wide range of provocative themes that have never been opened and have never had such a complex (yet mostly very ironic!) painting substratum as Stankovski give them.
Four themes dominate Stankovski’s painting: the painting itself (understood as a technique, medium, and some kind of treasury of gestures/manners, or archive of archetypal motives); the politics (often esoteric, “conspirative” and burlesque!); sex (partly understood as prominent painting subject of body examination) and friendship (which, as painting motive, can even be understood as Stankovski shamanistic attempt to close his friends/characters in some phantasmagoric creative universe which in the same time is great archive of Skopje’s, above all, alternative cultural and art scene.
